"Great," Clara muttered under her breath, two hours later, the empty corridor echoing her frustration back to her. "Just great."

She'd spent ten minutes stuck in the bathrooms near the smaller theatre when a group of guests stood nearby debating whether to spend their day by the pool or at the spa. After that she’d got lost near the guest hairdressers – which she didn’t even know existed – and had to backtrack a bit.

After that, she’d found Mila, who was racing too.

“Oh, thank goodness! Mila! Where the hell am I?” Clara scooted up behind the friendly waiter hoping to use her ship-wide familiarity to Clara's advantage.

“No way, Chef,” Mila grinned. “You’re kitchen. I’m waitstaff. We’re on different teams.”

“Come on,” Clara begged. “Give me a break. I swear I’ve never even been here before.”

But Mila gave her a playful wink and darted away, leaving Clara abandoned and disoriented.

She realised her lack of knowledge meant she had to take a calculated risk. The guest residential decks provided two long corridors running parallel right down the length of the ship – no bars, no pools, no mini golf or busy restaurants to negotiate. No lines of deck chairs laden with eyes that could disqualify her in an instant. Instead, if she was really lucky and all guests were already out and about at such an hour, she could leg it down most of the ship and hopefully reach the security of a staff lift before anyone saw her.

It was risky, but she was desperate.

But now, as she tiptoed down a plush-carpeted corridor deep in guest territory, the faint but unmistakable sound of an elevator pinging on her floor echoed down the hallway. Clara was trapped in an open, dead straight corridor with nowhere to hide.

“Shit, shit, shit!” she whispered between clenched teeth.

There were just seconds until she was caught out.

She spun on the spot and sprinted back to the safety of the last lift lobby.

She rounded the corner and barreled straight into the arms of Captain Jax Vesteren.

Jax looked as surprised to see her as she was to see Jax – but only for a moment. Her expression devolved into a look of wicked greed and mischief in no time.

"Chef Sutton, what are you doing here?" Jax asked, her grin wide.

"I got lost," Clara confessed, her heart rate slowing as she recognised the glint in Jax's eyes. "And then you scared me half to death."

Jax chuckled, crossing her arms over her chest. "Well, at least you're not out yet. Or are you following me to spy on my winning strategy?"

"Maybe I am," Clara shot back, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. The tension of the race was forgotten, replaced by the tension between them.

They both peeked around the corner of the lift lobby. The coast was clear.

“This is my corridor, Sutton. My tactics, my strategy. My race. You better not be following me.” Jax sounded tough but her body language said otherwise. She was pressed up against Clara’s back as they both regarded the silent corridor deciding whether or not to make a run for it.
